Pool A/ Tonga – USA (25-15): How the other half lives

It's always interesting when two minnow get to play each other, it really is a case of seeing how the other half lives.

The match between the USA and Tonga may have been short on quality, but the crowd basking in the Montpellier sunshine didn't seem to care about that. They were quite content to enjoy a game dominated by the two huge packs on display, with the Eagles spending rafts of time camped in the Tongan 22, dominating all the stats except for the only one that really matters, the score.

Which takes us neatly to a glaring point made obvious by the opening round of matches. One thing all the smaller teams do seem to have is a game tightly bound around forward play but an inability to cut loose when the opportunity presents itself.

That was the difference today. Tonga marginally out-beefed up front, but with an ability to run at speed with the ball in hand to score those all-important tries that make the difference between winners and losers.
